Bangkok to Phuket by Ferry, Distance Isn’t the Only Hurdle

Yamile Kabande

Traveling between Thailand’s bustling capital and its famous island paradise, Phuket, is a popular route for many visitors. While ferries are a fantastic way to navigate many waterways in Thailand, a direct ferry service from Bangkok to Phuket isn’t available.

The Geographical Challenge

The key reason for the lack of ferries is geography. Bangkok sits inland on the Chao Phraya River, which flows into the Gulf of Thailand. Phuket, on the other hand, is an island in the Andaman Sea on the opposite side of the Malay Peninsula. Traveling by sea would require a significant detour, making it impractical and time-consuming.

The distance between the two points also plays a role. While the straight-line distance might be around 82 kilometers (51 miles), a ferry route would likely be much longer.

Alternative Travel Options

Luckily, there are several convenient and scenic ways to get from Bangkok to Phuket:

  • Flights: The fastest option, with flights taking around an hour and a half.
  • Buses: A budget-friendly choice, with journeys lasting approximately 12 to 14 hours.
  • Trains: A comfortable and scenic option, although travel times can be longer than buses (around 16 to 18 hours).
  • Car or Motorbike: For the adventurous, driving offers flexibility and lets you explore along the way. However, the journey can take up to 12 hours.

Exploring Further

While a direct ferry trip isn’t on the cards, fret not! Thailand has an extensive ferry network connecting islands and coastal towns. If your itinerary includes island hopping or exploring coastal areas, ferries become a great way to travel. Do some research to discover the many ferry routes available in Thailand and plan your island adventure!
