How Many Tourists Visit Phuket Each Year?

Yamile Kabande

Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich culture. But with its rising popularity, you might wonder just how many tourists visit Phuket each year?

Pre-Pandemic Boom

Phuket’s tourism industry thrived before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, the island welcomed a staggering 14 million tourists, with a whopping 10 million being international visitors. This placed Phuket as the second-largest tourist destination in Thailand, next to the bustling capital city of Bangkok.

Pandemic Impact and Recovery

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Phuket’s tourism sector, with visitor numbers plummeting in 2020 and 2021. However, Thailand’s Phuket Sandbox scheme, launched in July 2021, jumpstarted the recovery process. This initiative allowed vaccinated travelers to visit Phuket quarantine-free, under specific guidelines.

Phuket’s Tourism Rebound

Phuket’s tourism industry has shown remarkable resilience. As of mid-2023, the island has witnessed an 80% increase in tourist arrivals compared to 2019. This translates to roughly 500,000 to 600,000 tourists visiting Phuket monthly.

The Phuket Tourist Association (PTA) is optimistic about the future, aiming to surpass 14 million tourists again in 2023, including both domestic and international visitors. This target reflects a strong recovery and highlights Phuket’s enduring appeal as a world-class tourist destination.

A Shift in Tourist Demographics?

While Phuket traditionally attracted a large number of Chinese tourists, recent reports suggest a shift. The easing of travel restrictions, coupled with the ongoing war in Ukraine, has led to a surge in visitors from Russia, Germany, Australia, and Kazakhstan.

Looking Ahead

Phuket’s tourism industry is on a promising trajectory. With the easing of travel restrictions and the continued influx of visitors, Phuket is poised to reclaim its status as a leading tourist destination in Southeast Asia.
