How to Get to Chinatown Bangkok by BTS

Suppakorn Thongpoon

Bangkok’s Chinatown, a vibrant maze of delicious street food, bustling markets, and beautiful temples, is a must-visit for any traveler. But navigating Bangkok’s public transportation system can be daunting. Fear not! This guide will tell you exactly how to get to Chinatown using the BTS Skytrain, Bangkok’s efficient elevated railway system.

Here’s the catch:

Unfortunately, Chinatown doesn’t have its own BTS station. But fret not, it’s still easily accessible via the MRT (subway) or by connecting with another BTS station.

Option 1: MRT Connection

  1. Take the BTS to Sukhumvit Station. This station is conveniently located next to the Asok BTS Station.

  2. Follow the signs for the MRT (often indicated by a blue and purple logo). You’ll find an underground passageway connecting the two stations.

  3. Take the MRT Blue Line heading towards Hua Lamphong. Ride until you reach Wat Mangkon Station, the stop for Chinatown.

  4. Take Exit 1, and voila! You’ll be right at the heart of Yaowarat Road, the main artery of Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Pro tip: Purchase a Rabbit Card, a reloadable travel card that works for both BTS and MRT. It’ll save you time queuing for tickets at each station.

Alternative: Taxi from another BTS Station

While not the most budget-friendly option, this can be a good choice if you have luggage or prefer a direct route.

  1. Take the BTS to any station closest to your starting point. Popular stations include Siam, Nana, or Saphan Taksin.

  2. Hail a taxi outside the station. Make sure it uses a meter to avoid inflated fares.

  3. Inform the driver you’re going to Yaowarat Road, Chinatown.

Bonus Option: Take a Chao Phraya River Express Boat

This scenic route offers a unique perspective of Bangkok.

  1. Take the BTS to Saphan Taksin Station.

  2. Exit the station and follow signs for the Sathorn Pier. You can purchase a ticket from the automated machines or counters.

  3. Take a Chao Phraya River Express Boat heading North. Disembark at Wat Mangkon Station pier.

  4. From here, follow the same instructions as mentioned in Option 1 (MRT Connection).

No matter which option you choose, getting to Bangkok’s Chinatown is a breeze. So lace up your walking shoes, prepare your appetite for delicious eats, and get ready to explore this vibrant cultural hub!
