Sleeper Train from Chiang Mai to Phuket, A Scenic Journey (But Not Quite Direct)

Narupon Hinshiranan

Traveling by train through Thailand offers a glimpse into the country’s landscape and culture. You might be dreaming of a relaxing overnight journey from Chiang Mai in the north to the sunny beaches of Phuket in the south. But hold on a minute, while there are sleeper trains on both routes, there isn’t a direct train connection between Chiang Mai and Phuket.

Here’s the thing: Phuket is an island, and train tracks don’t exactly go over water. So, while a sleeper train sounds romantic, it’s not quite possible for the entire route.

However, don’t ditch the train idea entirely! You can still incorporate a train journey into your trip. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Route: You’ll likely need to change trains in Bangkok, the capital city. Trains from Chiang Mai to Bangkok are plentiful, with both day and night options. From Bangkok, you can catch another train south towards Surat Thani, a mainland town with ferry connections to Phuket.

  • Train Classes: Thailand’s State Railway of Thailand (SRT) offers sleeper carriages in both first and second class. First class provides more privacy with lockable cabins and air conditioning, while second class offers a bunk bed setup in an open carriage.

  • Booking: You can book tickets online through the SRT website or through travel agents. Consider booking in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Alternatives to Consider:

  • Flying: If speed is a priority, then flying is the way to go. Several airlines offer direct flights between Chiang Mai and Phuket, with a flight time of around 1.5 hours.

  • Bus: Buses provide a more budget-friendly option. There are direct overnight buses from Chiang Mai to Phuket, although the journey can be quite long (around 14-16 hours).

The Verdict:

While a true sleeper train experience from Chiang Mai to Phuket isn’t available, incorporating trains into your journey can be a great way to experience Thailand. It offers a chance to relax, see the countryside, and maybe even strike up conversations with fellow travelers. If you have the time and enjoy scenic journeys, then train travel can be a memorable part of your trip. But if speed is your priority, then flying might be a better option.
