Bangkok, the vibrant capital of Thailand, has always been a popular tourist destination. But did you know it recently got a new, official name? Well, kind of.
Here’s the deal: In February 2022, the Royal Society of Thailand announced an update to the official names of various places in the country, including the capital. The new, preferred name for Bangkok became Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.
This however, doesn’t mean "Bangkok" is disappearing altogether. Here’s a breakdown to clear the confusion:
- Krung Thep Maha Nakhon: This is the full ceremonial name of Bangkok in Thai. It’s quite a mouthful, translating to "City of Angels, Great City of Immortals, Magnificent City of Nine Gems, Seat of the King, Royal Capital of the Great Land, Nine Provinces, Impregnable City of God Indra Built by Vishvakarman at Indra’s Behest".
- Krung Thep: This is a shortened, commonly used Thai version of the full name.
- Bangkok: This remains the internationally recognized name for the city and is still widely used.
The Royal Society clarified that they aren’t trying to replace "Bangkok." Instead, they aim to promote a more formal title alongside the familiar one.
So, whether you call it Bangkok or Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, you’re referring to the same incredible city!
