Where to Land in Bangkok, A Guide to Bangkok’s Airports

Somruthai Naensanit

Bangkok boasts not just one, but two airports! Depending on your airline and travel style, you might be landing at either Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK). This post will break down the key differences between the two to help you prepare for your arrival in the City of Angels.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK): The Main Gateway

  • Most international flights: Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok’s main international airport, handling flights from all over the world. If you’re flying from Europe, the US, or Australia, chances are high you’ll touch down here.
  • Modern amenities: Opened in 2006, Suvarnabhumi is a large and modern airport with plenty of shops, restaurants, and amenities. You’ll find currency exchange, duty-free shopping, and a good selection of places to grab a bite to eat.
  • Further from the city center: Suvarnabhumi is located about 25 kilometers east of Bangkok’s city center. However, the Airport Rail Link (ARL) provides a convenient and relatively fast connection to the city.

Don Mueang Airport (DMK): The Budget Airline Hub

  • Home to budget carriers: Don Mueang is the older of the two airports and primarily serves low-cost carriers like AirAsia and NokScoot. If you snagged a great deal on a flight to Bangkok, you might be landing here.
  • Closer to the city center: Don Mueang is located north of Bangkok’s city center, about 22 kilometers away. While the ARL doesn’t connect directly to Don Mueang, there are other transport options like taxis, ride-sharing apps, and public buses.
  • Simpler facilities: Compared to Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang has a more basic feel with fewer amenities. However, you’ll still find the essentials like currency exchange, ATMs, and some eateries.

So, which airport will you be landing at?

Unfortunately, you don’t have much control over which airport you’ll fly into as it depends on your airline’s choice. However, with a little knowledge about both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, you can be prepared for a smooth arrival in Bangkok regardless of your landing spot.
