Why is Bangkok Called the City of Angels?

Yamile Kabande

Bangkok, Thailand’s bustling capital, is a city of contrasts. Gleaming skyscrapers rise above ancient temples, vibrant street markets teem with life, and the scent of delicious street food mingles with the hum of tuk-tuks. But beneath the modern facade lies a rich history and culture, reflected in its evocative nickname: The City of Angels.

There are two main theories behind this moniker:

  • Land of Temples and Deities: Thailand is a deeply Buddhist country, and Bangkok is adorned with countless temples and shrines. These ornate structures are believed to be the dwelling places of spirits and deities, lending an air of sanctity to the city. The very presence of these sacred sites might have led people to perceive Bangkok as a city touched by the divine, thus earning the angelic association.

  • Hospitality and Friendly People: Thais are renowned for their warmth and welcoming smiles. The word "Sawasdee," their greeting, translates to "well-being," reflecting the emphasis Thais place on hospitality. Visitors to Bangkok often remark on the friendly nature of its residents, and this positive impression might have contributed to the city’s angelic reputation.

Bangkok’s official Thai name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, translates to "The City of Great Angels." However, the full ceremonial name is much longer and even translates to "The Great City of Angels, the Residence of the Emerald Buddha, the Grand Capital of the World Endowed with Nine Precious Gems…" This name itself reflects the grandeur and significance attributed to the city.

So, whether it’s the presence of magnificent temples or the welcoming spirit of its people, Bangkok’s nickname, the City of Angels, offers a glimpse into the city’s unique character. It’s a place where ancient traditions meet modern energy, and where visitors may just encounter a touch of serenity amidst the urban buzz.
